Tomas Nuñez-Garcés – Cello
Tomas Nuñez-Garcés (born 1984) started playing the cello at the age of six at the Åland Music Institute. He continued his studies at the Turku Music Conservatory and at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. He studied under Jakob Lind, Timo Hanhinen, Hannu Kiiski and Marko Ylönen. Tomas has also participated in many master classes both in Finland and abroad.
Tomas gives recitals regularly. He is also a soloist, chamber musician and orchestra musician playing all over the world including Greenland, Sweden, USA, Germany, the Czech Republic, Japan and China. As a soloist he has played with Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Kymi Sinfonietta, Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Pori City Orchestra, Wegelius Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestra of Finnish National Opera.
2008-2009 Tomas was appointed as cello teacher at Åland Music Intitute.
He won the XI National Turku Cello Competition In 2010, where he also received the audience award as well as a prize for the best performance of the competition’s commission work. He is a member of the Postiglione quartet, which won the International Night and Sun String Quartet Competition in Rovaniemi 2009. He is also a member of AND-ensemble and Trio ArTempo giving conserts both in Finland and abroad.
Since 2011 Tomas is the solo cellist at the Finnish National Opera Orchestra and he has accepted the solo cello position at the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, starting January 2015.
He plays a Vincenzo Postiglione cello owned by the Swedish Instrument Foundation in Finland.
